CHAPTER SEVEN

Two weeks later

Wilomena hadn't seen Rain in her dreams for some time, but she never forgot. Every day, she would often revisit the memory of his kiss, for it was her only reason to smile.

Cecilia was still at Welwyn Hall. The length of her visit was nearing a month, and though Arthur fussed to his wife about her aunt's extended stay, he had yet to complain to Cecilia herself. George occupied much of Cecilia's time. They were often in the garden together, testing George's ability to walk. After his time in the coma, he had much to relearn.

Wilomena wanted to mention her dream to Cecilia, to ask her if their dream was shared, but she never found the courage to ask such an unusual question. She didn't want to look mad to her only friend and ally.

Every night, Wilo, Cecilia, George and Arthur would gather for supper. Wilo would have preferred if Arthur wasn't with them, but he never missed an opportunity to vex her with his presence. His company would be loathsome enough if he wasn't increasingly suspicious for absolutely no reason.

There was a handsome serving boy, eighteen or nineteen, who never missed an opportunity to smile at Wilomena. When the young man delivered their food, he only smiled at her, and Arthur noticed.

He hissed in her ear, “Is he in love with you?”

Wilomena was genuinely oblivious. “Who?”

“That young man, the one who carries our food,” Arthur explained. “He's always smiling at you, and now you're tossing smiles back at him. Are you trying to lure him to your bed? Or... maybe you've already opened your legs for him?”

“Arthur, you're being absurd!” Wilo hissed. “Are you so bored that you have to invent new reasons to attack me?”

The others couldn't hear their whispered conversation, but Cecilia must have sensed her niece's distress, because she immediately changed the subject. “George and I have an announcement to make. As of this afternoon, we are officially engaged.”

“Engaged to be married?” Arthur threw back his head and chuckled. “Are you serious?”

“We're very serious. I'm in love with Cecilia,” George said. “Please don't mock us with your laughter, brother.”

“Sorry, George. I didn't mean to insult you,” Arthur apologized. “But it is surprising. For the longest time, you were slumbering away... and now you're getting married? I've seen you with Miss Aubrey, but I didn't realize you were off falling in love with her.”

George said, “It was easy to fall in love with her. Miss Aubrey is a handsome, incredible, intelligent woman, and she's made me a lucky man.”

“She is smart, I'll give her that. I've seen her reading books that most women wouldn't dare to crack open,” Arthur said. “Refreshingly, it's actually possible to have an intellectual discussion with her.”

Wilomena knew his compliment for Cecilia was a veiled insult for her, but she didn't let it trouble her. Clearing her throat, she said, “Well... I, for one, am incredibly happy for you! You both deserve so much happiness!”

Arthur added, “I, for one, am wondering how they intend to pay for this wedding.
